Zur reduzierten Schädlichkeit der elektrischen Zigarette gegenüber der Tabakzigarette gibt es eine Vielzahl von Studien:

 

Siegel/ Cahn-Studie

Diese Studie von 2010 zeigt, dass die Anteile krebserregender Stoffe in der eZigarette niedriger sind als in herkömmlichen Zigaretten.Zachary Cahn von der University of California in Berkeley und Michael Siegel von der Boston University School of Public Health werteten 16 Studien zu E-Zigaretten aus, die sich mit den Inhaltsstoffen des Liquids befassten. Sie kamen zu dem Ergebnis, dass sich im Dampf der E-Zigarette weniger krebserregende Stoffe befinden als im Tabakrauch.„Es wurden keine Inhaltsstoffe entdeckt, deren Konzentration ein ernsthaftes Gesundheitsrisiko darstellen würde. Daher scheint das Dampfen deutlich sicherer als das Rauchen. Würde man diese Produkte vom Markt nehmen, würde man tausende Dampfer zurück zum Rauchen zwingen.“ eZigarette: Siegel/ Cahn-Studie

 

Untersuchung zur Zellsterblichkeit (Clearstream)

In einer Untersuchung aus dem Jahr 2010 wurde das Verhalten von lebenden Zellkulturen analysiert, nachdem sie mit eZigarettendampf und zum Vergleich auch mit dem Rauch einer Tabakzigarette bedampft wurden. Ergebnis: Die Zellsterblichkeit bei Tabakzigaretten ist 70mal höher als bei eZigaretten. eZigarette: Clearstream-Studie

 

Propylenglykol-Studien

Es gibt drei größere Untersuchungen zur Auswirkung von Propylenglykol-Dampf auf lebende Organismen.

 

a) University of Chicago 1947: Über einen Zeitraum von 12-18 Monaten wurden Versuchstiere (Affen und Ratten) konstant mit hohen Dosen von Propylenglykol bedampft. Resultat: Propylenglykol-Dampf hatte selbst in hoher Konzentration keine nennenswerten negativen AJournal ofuswirkungen auf die Tiere. 

 

b) Aerosol Medicine 2007. Über 28 Tage wurden Ratten und Hunde bedampft. Resultat: Keine signifikanten Auswirkungen auf die Gesundheit. 

 

c) Toxicology-Magazin 2011. Über neun Monate wurden Hunde mit Propylenglykol bedampft. Resultat: Keine signifikanten Auswirkungen auf die Atemwege oder sonstige Schädigungen. eZigarette: Studie Toxicology-Magazin

 

FDA-Studie

Die FDA-Studie wird häufig mit dem Hinweis zitiert, dass hier in eZigaretten-Liquids Nitrosamine, also krebsfördernde Stoffe gefunden wurden. Nach öffentlichem Druck hat die FDA Monate nach einer Pressemeldung die genauen Werte veröffentlichen müssen. Das Ergebnis: in zwei der chinesischen Liquidproben wurden tatsächlich Nitrosamine gefunden. Doch die Menge liegt noch unter derjenigen einer handelsüblichen Tomate. Die Studie ist also eigentlich eine gute Werbung fur die eZigarette. Zudem gibt es mittlerweile Analysen diverser Labore in Deutschland, die allesamt keine Nitrosamine in den eZigaretten-Liquids nachweisen konnten. (Stand Januar 2012)

 

Chest-Studie

Auch die von den Gegnern der eZigarette häufig zitierte sogenannte „Chest-Studie“ bestätigt bei genauerer Hinsicht die Minderschädlichkeit der eZigarette und prüfte folgende Werte:

Die Spirometrie ist ein medizinisches Verfahren zur Messung des Lungenvolumens zur Beurteilung der Lungenfunktion. Im Gegensatz zur Tabakzigarette zeigte sich hier kein messbarer Unterschied vor und nach der Benutzung der eZigarette. Bei der Impulsoszillometrie, einem Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Atemwegswiderstandes („Verengung der Bronchien“) wurde zwar eine minimale Erhöhung des Strömungswiderstandes in den Atemwegen nach dem Dampfen gemessen. Dieser Wert war jedoch nicht pathologisch und so gering, dass keine klinische Relevanz bestand. Bei der FeNO-Untersuchung schließlich wurde die Konzentration an Stickstoffmonoxid in der ausgeatmeten Luft gemessen. Diese spiegelt das Ausmaß der Entzündung in den Bronchien wider: Je stärker die Entzündung, desto mehr Stickstoffmonoxid wird gebildet. Allerdings wurde ein leichter Abfall des FeNO-Wertes gemessen, also ein Entzündungsrückgang und somit genau das Gegenteil dessen, was durch den bloßen Hinweis auf die FeNO-Messung von den Gegnern der eZigarette zumeist impliziert wird.
